On September 6, Hurricane Irma hit St. John USVI with the most force in all the Caribbean, leaving lives, boats, homes and businesses in shambles and a hole in the heart of so many–near and far–who love the island. Hurricane Maria followed a short time later, adding insult to injury.

Jill Hale, a Harford County native, moved to the island of St. John almost 17 years ago gut intuition; she has always trusted the whispering of her heart over the shouting of her senses. She found her niche within the community at Gift Hill School where she has worked over the last decade as both a teacher and administrative assistant. In addition she continued her love of pottery throwing clay at Maho Bay Clay Works in Coral Bay. She always had a dream of living on that rock, owning property and building a home. Her husband, Jason, came into her life and helped turn that dream into a reality by starting a boat charter business from the ground up.

Life on a twenty square mile island is not easy. Its filled with inconveniences and difficulties. Those who choose to make it their home do so with intent and purpose with the vision to lead a different type of life; a life with more presence, gratefulness and kindness. Jill and Jason are two people who have come together with the same goals, passion and drive to forever engrain their hearts into the island of St. John. Through many, many arduous years of challenges, hard work and dedication they never silenced that deep down inner voice guiding them to exactly where they wanted to be.

September 6, 2017 Hurricane Irma, the strongest hurricane ever recorded in the Atlantic with winds reaching over 220mph made direct landfall on St.John. In its wake, a post-apocalyptic trail of devastation remains. Overnight, the storm took away the life that Jill had worked and fought so hard to build and left the island of St.John unrecognizable. The scale of destruction is truly unfathomable. Jill suffered an overwhelming blow in the aftermath of the storm losing her home and all belongings in addition to Jason’s boat charter business coming to an abrupt halt. Jill and the island will be starting over. The people of the island have an unwavering commitment to restore the beauty of St. John.

St.John will be rebuilt on the backs of hard work, will power and perseverance of its people and also through continued private funding from its larger community.
Today the USVI are still without power, and in many areas without cell coverage, broadband service and reliable access to fresh water, food and supplies.
We have chosen to support The Coral Bay Community Fund, a non-profit fully volunteer organization, that is committed to the long term relief and rebuild of St. John. The people of the Virgin Islands, the family of Jill Hale, and all those who hold the island dear thank you for your support.

Please join us at The Green Door in the DIY Workshop Studio on Saturday November 4, 2017 to create a custom wood slab art or make a set of 3 wood slice ornaments.
This is a Drop- IN DIY Workshop.
Guests can come anytime between 10am – 6pm to participate.
Cost: $20.00 each. All supplies are included.

We will be using Chalk Paint® by Annie Sloan for this workshop, all 36 colors are available. Guests will choose from a variety of stencils to create a custom look!

Wood slabs are between 8-12 inches wide and 6-8 inches tall. Wood ornament slices are between 3-6” round. As this wood is cut from a tree, no two slices are alike. There are variations in shape, size and wood coloring, including knots and other patterns. These slabs and slices are untreated and not sanded to maintain the rustic look; splitting could occur over time.

A special thanks to locally owned and operated, Baker Forest Products for donating the wood from Harford County land for this fundraiser and The Green Door for the use of their DIY Studio, Chalk Paint® and all supplies.

Please feel free to share this event and invite your friends!
